❓ FAQ

What is Word Wolf?

A talking game from Japan. Everyone gets the same word except the wolf (or wolves), who gets a slightly different one. You talk about your word, look for the player whose comments don't quite fit, and vote. Once a wolf realizes they're the odd one out, they try to blend in.

Do I know if I'm a wolf?

Not in the normal mode — you only see a word, and part of the fun is realizing yours might be different. In blank mode, wolves get no word — only a card saying they're a wolf — so wolves know they're wolves, and villagers know they're villagers because they got a word. Villagers look for whoever doesn't know the word; wolves listen for clues and try to blend in.

How many phones do we need?

Just one. Checking words and voting are both done by passing the device around. Between turns a screen shows only the next player's name, so nobody sees the previous word.

Can we add our own word pairs?

Yes. Enter two words under "Your own word pairs" and tap Add. Your pairs are stored only in this browser (localStorage) and never sent to a server. Select only the "Your own pairs" category to play with just those.

How does scoring work?

When you record a round, everyone on the winning side gets 1 point. If a wolf is caught but the wolf side guesses the majority word, the wolves win (judge the guess out loud and tap the result). Changing the number of players starts scores from 0.

Will the same words keep coming up?

Recently used pairs are held back for a while (remembered in this browser). Once every pair in the selected categories has been used, it picks again from all of them except the last one.

Word Wolf (pass-and-play on one phone)

Word Wolf for one phone or tablet passed around the table. Everyone gets the same word except the wolf, who gets a slightly different one. Talk about your word and find the player whose word doesn't quite fit. A "pass it to the next player" screen appears between turns, so nobody sees the previous word. The timer, voting, the reveal and running scores all happen on this page.

    How to play

    1. Set the number of players, wolves and discussion time, then tap "Start game".
    2. Hand the phone to the player shown. Only they look at their word, then hide it and pass it on.
    3. Once everyone has seen their word, start the timer and talk. Don't say the word itself — describe it, share memories.
    4. When time's up, vote: pass the phone around to vote in turn, or decide by show of hands and enter the result.
    5. If a wolf is caught, the wolf side can still win by guessing the majority word. Record the result and scores add up.
