What is a check digit?

The final digit, derived from the ones before it. If a digit is misread or mistyped the arithmetic no longer works out, so the error is caught immediately. For JAN/EAN the rule is: triple every second digit from the right, add them all up, and take the distance to the next multiple of ten.

Do the leading digits show where a product was made?

No - they show **where the number was registered**. A Japanese company manufacturing abroad still uses a Japanese GS1 prefix (450-459, 490-499), and an imported product may carry a foreign prefix.

Why do identical-looking products have different barcodes?

A GTIN identifies a specific item: size, pack count and packaging all change the number. Outer cases use GTIN-14, which prepends a packaging indicator.

How do ISBN-13 and ISBN-10 differ?

ISBNs became 13 digits in 2007: prefix 978 and recalculate the check digit. An ISBN-13 starting with 979 has no ISBN-10 equivalent. The check digit rules also differ - ISBN-10 works modulo 11, which is why it can end in X.

Can it generate the barcode image?

Deliberately not. A printed barcode gets scanned, and an incorrect bar pattern would be read as a different product. This tool sticks to reading and verifying the number. For QR codes, use the QR code generator.
