Webcam Test

Check whether your webcam works with one click. See the real resolution, the measured frame rate and a brightness check, switch cameras, mirror the view, go full screen and save a snapshot. Video is never uploaded or recorded — it is only shown on this device.

Features

  • Open and click — no ads, no sign-up. In browsers that remember your permission, it starts the moment the page opens from the second visit
  • Shows the resolution your camera actually delivers (videoWidth × videoHeight) and a frame rate measured from real frames
  • Request Auto, 720p, 1080p or 4K and see when the actual size differs — a quick way to find your camera’s maximum
  • Detects a black picture (closed shutter), a frozen feed, too dark and overexposed, with tips to fix each
  • Switch cameras, front / back on phones, mirror view, full screen and PNG snapshots. Video is never uploaded or recorded

When to use it

Before a meeting

Make sure your face shows up and isn’t too dark before joining Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Google Meet.

Online classes

Students and teachers can check their cameras before class starts — works on school Chromebooks too.

Video interviews

Get the lighting and angle right before an interview, and save a snapshot to see how you look.

New laptop or webcam

Find out whether a new laptop or external webcam really delivers 1080p or 30 fps.

Privacy

The camera picture is only shown inside your browser. It is never sent to a server and never recorded. Only when you press “Save snapshot” is that single frame downloaded to this device as a PNG. The only things stored in this browser (localStorage) are your mirror, resolution, camera and theme settings. Pressing “Stop camera” or closing the page releases the camera.

FAQ

Is my video uploaded or recorded?

No. The video is only displayed in your browser on this device. It is not sent to any server and not recorded. Only when you press “Save snapshot” is one frame saved to this device as a PNG. Pressing “Stop camera” or closing the page releases the camera, and your browser’s camera indicator turns off.

My webcam isn’t working (black, can’t start, blocked)

If the picture is black, check the lens cover (shutter) and your laptop’s camera key. “Couldn’t start the camera” most likely means another app or tab such as Zoom or Teams is using it — close it and press “Try again”. If it still fails, the camera driver may be stuck (a restart usually fixes it) or your system privacy settings may be blocking the camera. If access is blocked, allow the camera for this site from the address bar icon, and allow your browser in the Windows or macOS privacy settings too.

Why are the resolution and frame rate lower than the spec sheet?

In “Auto” the browser picks the starting size (often 640×480 or 1280×720). Choose “1080p” or “4K” and the camera switches to the closest size it supports. In a dark room many cameras lower the frame rate to get more light (a 30 fps camera can drop to around 15 fps); more light brings it back.

If I mirror the view, do others see me mirrored?

No. Mirroring only affects this preview. Most meeting apps also show your own video mirrored, while others receive the unmirrored picture. This tool mirrors by default too, and snapshots are saved unmirrored — the way others see you.

Mirroring only changes how the preview looks here. Saved snapshots and what others see in a call are not mirrored.

How to use

  1. Press “Test my camera” and choose “Allow” when your browser asks (if your browser remembers the permission, next time it starts as soon as you open the page)
  2. If you see yourself, your camera works. Check the quality with “Resolution (actual)”, “Frame rate” and “Brightness” below
  3. With several cameras, pick one under “Camera”. Use “Requested resolution” (choose 4K) to find this camera’s maximum
  4. “Save snapshot” downloads the current frame as a PNG. When you’re done, press “Stop camera” or close the page

Webcam not working? Check these

  • Black picture: check the lens cover (shutter), your laptop’s camera key and the USB cable of an external webcam
  • “Couldn’t start the camera”: another app or tab such as Zoom or Teams is most likely using it — close it and try again. If it still fails, restart your computer (camera driver glitch) and check your system camera settings
  • “Blocked”: allow the camera for this site from the address bar icon, and allow your browser in the system privacy settings
  • Choppy video: if the frame rate is under 15 fps, add more light (cameras slow down in the dark) or lower the resolution
