Mic Test

A free online mic test: see at once whether your microphone works with a live level meter and waveform, then record a few seconds and play your voice back. Switch between microphones and compare noise suppression, echo cancellation and auto gain on or off. Recordings stay in this device's memory and are never uploaded.

Features

  • One press and you see whether sound is coming in, with a level meter (with peak hold) and a live waveform.
  • Automatically tells you “working”, “too quiet” or “clipping”, with a hint on how to fix it.
  • Record 5 or 10 seconds and play your voice back. The recording stays in memory; it is saved only if you press Download.
  • Turn noise suppression, echo cancellation and auto gain on or off to compare meeting-app sound with the raw mic.
  • Switch between microphones from a list; plugging and unplugging is picked up automatically.
  • Blocked, not found or in use: failures come with steps for your browser and operating system.

Use cases

Before a meeting

Before joining Zoom, Teams or Google Meet, record a sample to make sure your voice comes through clearly.

Online classes

Teachers and students can check the mic before class, and see which microphone the computer is actually using.

Streaming and recording

Find a distance and input level that does not clip before you go live or record a video.

New headset

Plugged in a new headset or USB mic? Switch between it and the built-in mic and compare how each sounds.

Privacy

Microphone audio is processed in this browser only and is never sent to a server. A recording lives in memory and disappears when you close the page; it becomes a file on your device only if you press Download. Device names and processing settings are not stored; only your light/dark theme choice is saved on this device.

FAQ

Is my recording uploaded anywhere?

No. It only exists in this device's memory and is gone when you close the page or press “Delete recording”. Press “Download” only if you want to keep a file.

The meter does not move at all.

Check the mute switch on your device or headset, whether another microphone is selected in the list, and whether another app is using the mic. On Windows the browser must be allowed under Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone; on macOS under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.

Should I test with noise suppression on or off?

On is closer to what meeting apps send, since most of them apply similar processing. Turn it off to judge the microphone itself or how noisy your room is.

Is the dB number the same as a sound level meter?

No. It is relative to the largest level that can be recorded digitally (dBFS), not the loudness of your room. Reaching 0 dB means clipping. A normal speaking voice usually sits around −30 to −10 dB.

Audio processing

With everything on, you hear roughly what Zoom, Teams or Google Meet send. Turn them off to hear the raw microphone.

Record and play back

Length

Press “Test my microphone” first.

The recording disappears when you close this page. It is saved as a file only if you press Download. Use headphones for playback so the mic does not pick up your speakers.

How to use

  1. Press “Test my microphone” and allow microphone access when your browser asks.
  2. Speak in your normal voice. When the meter and waveform move and it says “Your mic is working”, you are good to go.
  3. If you have several microphones, pick another from the list and check it the same way.
  4. Choose 5 or 10 seconds, press “Record”, then press “Play” to hear yourself.

If it does not work

If the meter does not move, check the mute switch, whether another app is using the mic, and your operating system's privacy settings (Windows microphone access, macOS System Settings). When something fails, the page shows steps for your browser.
