Melody Sketchpad

Catch the tune in your head on a piano keyboard, note by note, then play it back, fix it and export WAV or MIDI.

Features

  • Find, record and fix on one screen: play freely with Input off, then turn it on and each key adds a note at the cursor.
  • Scale guide: guesses the key from your notes and dims the keys outside it, so you search 7 notes instead of 12.
  • Fix pitch, position and length in the piano roll with taps and drags. Up to 50 undo and redo steps.
  • Export WAV and MIDI. Timing is stored in beats, so changing the tempo never breaks the melody.
  • Phrases are saved automatically in this browser only, and the tool opens offline once you've visited it.
  • Record your humming too. Cut, delete and reorder it on a waveform, and play it along with the melody while you find the notes.

Use cases

Catch a tune before it's gone

Hummed something on your commute or in the shower? Find it on the phone keyboard and save it. No sheet music needed.

Hand a melody to an AI music service

Use the WAV with the audio upload feature of AI music services such as Suno to build on your own melody (what's possible and length limits depend on the service).

Sketch before opening a DAW

Export MIDI and open it in GarageBand, BandLab, Ableton or Logic. Choose sounds and add accompaniment there.

Ear training

Pick out a melody you hear, then play it back to check. Loop playback and the metronome help with the details.

Privacy

Phrases and humming recordings are stored only in this browser (IndexedDB) and never sent to a server. The microphone is used only while you are recording under Humming. Sounds are generated in your browser too. Clearing site data deletes your phrases, so export anything important as WAV or MIDI.

FAQ

Can I use it without reading music?

Yes. Every key plays a sound, so you find notes by ear. White keys are labelled C D E (or Do Re Mi or numbers in settings), and the scale guide highlights only the keys that fit the key of your melody.

How do I use it with Suno?

Save a WAV and upload it with the audio upload option on Suno's create page. If your phrase is short, set Repeat to 2× or 4× for a longer clip. Services change their requirements (such as length limits), so check their current guidance too.

Can I add chords or accompaniment?

No. The tool focuses on recording a single-note melody quickly. Notes never overlap, and moving or stretching a note stops at its neighbours. Add accompaniment in a DAW from the MIDI file, or leave it to an AI music service.

Where are my phrases saved?

Inside this browser (IndexedDB). They're still there next time on the same device and browser. They don't sync between devices, so export MIDI to move a phrase. In private browsing they may be deleted when you close the window.

There's no sound on my iPhone

Sound is enabled the first time you touch the screen. If it still doesn't play, check the volume and that no other app is using audio. The tool plays even with the silent switch on, but older iOS versions may need the switch turned off.

Can I play with my computer keyboard?

Yes. A S D F G H J K L ; are the white keys (A = C) and W E T Y U O P are the black keys. Z / X shift the octave, Space plays or stops, R toggles Input, 1–5 choose the note length, . toggles dotted and 0 adds a rest.

Humming

Tap the waveform to select that part and place the cut point (red line). Drag a selected part to reorder it (on a phone, press and hold first). While a part is selected, Play humming starts from the cut point; tap empty space to deselect and play from the start.

Record your humming with the microphone, then cut, delete and reorder it. Each recording is added at the end, stays on this device and is never uploaded. With Include humming in Play above on, the humming and the melody play on the same timeline, so you can find the notes while you listen.

Settings

The scale guide dims the keys and piano-roll rows that aren't in the chosen key (in Auto, a key that contains every note you've entered). A minor key shows the same notes as its relative major. Octave numbers put middle C at 4 (C4); some DAWs label it C3.

Export

Repeat

Upload the WAV to AI music services such as Suno. MIDI opens in GarageBand, BandLab or any DAW. Repeating a short phrase makes a longer audio clip.

How to use

  1. Set the tempo and press keys to find the notes (nothing is written down while Input is off). If you might forget the tune, record it first under Humming below.
  2. When you find them, turn on Input, pick a note length and press keys — each one is added at the cursor. Use Rest to leave a gap.
  3. Press Play to listen. Tap a wrong note in the piano roll and fix its pitch, position or length with the buttons or by dragging. With Input on, pressing a key replaces the selected note's pitch and moves to the next note.
  4. Phrases are saved automatically on this device. Open, duplicate or delete them from My phrases.
  5. When you're done, save a WAV for services like Suno, or a MIDI file to keep working in a DAW.
  6. Under Humming, Record captures your humming from the microphone (each recording is added at the end). Tap the waveform and use Cut here, Delete unwanted parts, and reorder parts with Earlier / Later or by dragging. The parts play and save back to back as one recording.
