  • Click a word to fix its reading everywhere it appears; names and places are flagged for checking

FAQ

Which list is used for school grades?

The Gakunen-betsu Kanji Haitōhyō from Japan's Ministry of Education course of study (in force since April 2020): 80, 160, 200, 202, 193 and 191 kanji for grades 1–6, 1,026 in total.

A reading is wrong

Readings are estimated with the kuromoji morphological dictionary, so names, places and context-dependent words can be misread. Click the word in the preview to type the correct reading.

Can I print vertical text?

Yes. Choose Vertical in the print preview. Furigana appear to the right of the kanji and short numbers are set upright. Choose Save as PDF in the print dialog for a PDF.

Can I show romaji instead of kana?

Yes. Set the furigana script to Romaji to put Hepburn romaji over the kanji, which helps beginners who cannot read kana yet.
