❓ FAQ

Hepburn vs Kunrei-shiki?

Hepburn follows English pronunciation (shi, chi, tsu, fu, ji). Kunrei-shiki follows the kana table systematically (si, ti, tu, hu, zi) and is taught in Japanese elementary schools. Station names, passports and most English text use Hepburn.

What are the passport rules?

Long o and u are omitted (おおの → ONO, さいとう → SAITO), n becomes M before b, m and p (なんば → NAMBA), and a small っ doubles the next consonant. Spellings such as OHNO are exceptions granted on request.

A kanji reading is wrong

Readings are estimated by a morphological dictionary, so names and place names can be misread. Type the correct reading in hiragana instead.

I cannot type macrons (ō)

Choose "Keep vowels" for toukyou-style spelling or "Omit" for tokyo.
