Writing historical fiction

Start from the Japanese template and adjust it to your story.

Your setup stays in the browser and is never uploaded. Only the share button sends the URL to the shortening service.

❓ FAQ

What steps work well?

Powers of ten are easy to work with when you are improvising prices. Steps like 12 and 20 divide neatly by three and four, which suits haggling in a market scene - part of why the old British pound (20 shillings, 240 pence) lasted so long.

Can I hand my setup to other people?

Press "Copy share URL" and the names and steps travel in the link. Anyone who opens it sees the same setup - handy for a game master sending it to players, or a co-author.

Is the Japanese template historically accurate?

1 ryo = 4 bu = 16 shu is exactly how Edo-period gold worked, but the rate between gold and copper mon moved a great deal over time. The 1 shu = 250 mon here is a workable fiction for storytelling, not a historical constant.

Can steps be fractional?

Yes - the weight template uses 1 kan = 6.25 kin. Any remainder in a breakdown is left as a decimal in the bottom tier.

I want to convert real-world units.
