What is the East Asian age (kazoe-doshi)?

A traditional way of counting: a person is 1 at birth and gains a year every New Year's Day rather than on the birthday. It is still used for some Japanese customs.

On the birthday itself, which age is shown?

This tool adds a year on the birthday. Under Japanese law a person legally ages at the end of the day before the birthday, which is why children born on 1 April belong to the previous school year; the school-year table follows that rule.

How are school years calculated?

Children born from 2 April to 1 April of the following year form one grade and enter elementary school in the April after turning 6. Then 6 years of elementary, 3 of junior high, 3 of high school and 4 of university.

How are era boundaries handled?

Taisho, Showa, Heisei and Reiwa switch exactly on the accession dates (30 Jul 1912, 25 Dec 1926, 8 Jan 1989, 1 May 2019). Meiji is applied from 1 Jan 1868.
