Slope & Angle Calculator
Converts between angle, grade %, 1:n ratio, radians and roof pitch, and solves the slope triangle. Includes ramp, roof and stair guidance.
Conversions
Type into any one field and the rest are calculated for you.
Grade % is the rise for every 100 of run, 1:n is the run for every 1 of rise, and roof pitch (sun) is the rise for every 10 of run. All representations exist only while the angle is above 0° and below 90°.
Slope triangle
Lengths can be in any unit (metres, feet, inches) – results come back in the same unit.

Ramps (accessibility)
| Slope | Angle | Grade % |
|---|---|---|
| 1:8 | 7.13° | 12.5% |
| 1:10 | 5.71° | 10% |
| 1:12 | 4.76° | 8.33% |
| 1:15 | 3.81° | 6.67% |
| 1:20 | 2.86° | 5% |
The ADA and most building codes cap ramps at 1:12 (8.33%); 1:15 or gentler is much easier to self-propel in a manual wheelchair. Japan's barrier-free standard is 1/12 indoors and 1/15 outdoors.
Road grade (% signs)
| Grade % | Angle | Slope |
|---|---|---|
| 3% | 1.72° | 1:33.3 |
| 5% | 2.86° | 1:20 |
| 8% | 4.57° | 1:12.5 |
| 10% | 5.71° | 1:10 |
| 12% | 6.84° | 1:8.3 |
| 15% | 8.53° | 1:6.7 |
| 20% | 11.31° | 1:5 |
The number on a hill sign is the grade in percent. Ordinary roads are designed up to roughly 5–12% depending on design speed; motorways stay nearer 3–5%.
Roof pitch
| Sun | Angle | Grade % |
|---|---|---|
| 1sun | 5.71° | 10% |
| 2sun | 11.31° | 20% |
| 3sun | 16.7° | 30% |
| 4sun | 21.8° | 40% |
| 5sun | 26.57° | 50% |
| 6sun | 30.96° | 60% |
| 8sun | 38.66° | 80% |
| 10sun | 45° | 100% |
A Japanese "4 sun" pitch means 4 units of rise per 10 of run – about 21.8°, or 40%. In imperial terms it is the same idea as 4.8:12. Below 3 sun the detailing has to be watertight; above 6 sun you need scaffolding to work on the roof.
Stairs (rise and going)
Japanese housing stairs are limited to a 23 cm riser and a 15 cm going. A comfortable flight has 2 × riser + going close to 60 cm (about 63–65 cm in most Western rules of thumb).
